COUNCIL BRIEFS Salaries increased NORTH VANCOUVER City Council gave final adop- tion Monday to a bylaw that increases annual aldermanic salaries from $12,482 to $15,242 and increases the city mayor's salary from $41,607 20 $45,727. Aldermen Barbara Sharp, Barbara Perrault and Stella Jo Dean initially voted against the proposed 22% cat- ch-up raise for aldermen, stating ideological reasons for opposing substantial raises during a recession. With Aldermen Dean and Bill Bell absent for Mon- day’s vote, the bylaw was passed 3-2, with Sharp and Perrault voting against. Light cash WEST VANCOUVER District Council approved Mon- day night a $700 expenditure to fund half the cost of in- stalling Christmas lighting in the Ambleside commercial district. The other half will be paid for by the Ambleside Village Association. But council is holding off on a request for money from another group, the Ambleside Marketing Organiza- tion (AMO), which has been placing ads in various publications and organizing a weekend of family evenis, Nov. 30 to Dec. 1. AMO wants to adopt an overall decorating theme of cedar boughs and twinkling white lights, with council funding much of the $8,000 needed. N. Shore police crack down at intersections NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP will be paying special at- tention to motorists passing through local intersections to- - day in a bid to crack down on drivers commiting traffic infractions. The move is part of the pro- vince-wide Fools Rush In cam- paign which is targeting motorists comniiting traffic violations at in- tersections. The campaign, spon- sored by the B.C. solicitor gener- al’s ministry, the Insurance Corp. of B.C. and local police depart- ments, ends on Friday. North Vancouver RCMP Sgt. Don Miller said local RCMP members will be moved to the day shift today and they will only be looking for intersection traffic vi- olations. “We'll be conducting a big blitz on Wednesday. He may have used the name “George.” @ Suspect 3: a white male of sim- ilar age and size, with dark hair and glasses. The sailor who was beaten and robbed was reunited with his ship on Sunday night. AN 18-YEAR-old foreign-ex- change student died early Satur- day after the car she was driving down Cypress Bowl Road went out of control and flipped severai times. According to a West Vancouver Police spokesman the accident oc- curred at approximately 3 a.m. The deceased, Lin Sen Huang, an exchange student from Taiwan living with a family in Victoria, was with friends returning from a lookout point at Cypress.
