developments managed by the
British Coiumbia Housing
Management Commission, corm-
pete to win prizes in the Commis-
sion’s gardening competition. This
year, Elizabeth Nordal, Wes Ben-
nett from Stratford Gardens, Alex
Laurie from Sunset Towers, Lillia
Nagy from Grandview Terrace
and Steve Szalkai from Orchard
Park have all won “Expert
Gardener” awards, at B.C. Hous-
ing’s “People, Plants & Homes
Garden Parties.**

A panel of horticultural experts
judge the coiortul and fragrant
flower and vegetable gardens, and
select winners in several
categories, inchiding Best Child's
Garden, Best Patio Garden and
Best Balcony/Container Garden.

Awards are given to those tenants
who have enhanced their com-
munities by participating in’ the

their winning garden. Some of the
other prizes include gardening
tools, gardening books, plants,
calendars and water wands.

All B.C. Housing tenants are
invited to the garden parties held
in The Floral Hall at VanDusen
Gardens. The first event in the
afternoon is for senior citizens,
followed by an evening event for
families. Children have the oppor-
tunity to make screen prints and
to participate in reading circles
put on by Read Canada, a group
dedicated to the promotion of lit-
eracy, while David Tarrant of
CBC-TV’s “Canadian Gardener’
hosts a gardening workshop for
adults.

The People. Plants & Homes
Program is a unique urban
gardening program siarted by
B.C. Housing in 1977, to en-
courage pride of occupancy
among tenants of social housing
in many parts of the province.
The program offers gardening
workshops, advice and plant sup-
plies to B.C. Housing tenants.

Some of the program’s most
avid gardeners are senior citizens.
Many people in their 70s and 80s
have taken part in the People,
Plants & Homes Program for
more than 10 years, and euch
summer, they look forward to
Sharing gardening tips and the

fruits of the labors.

“This program is also very
popular among young children,”
says Joyce Fitz-Gibbon. coor-
dinator of the program. “think
it's wonderful to see how interest-
ed and careful they are in other
people’s gardens, once they've
grown their own flowers and
vegetables.""

“Gardening makes people feel
good about their homes,” says
Joyce. **We see many people tak-
ing real pride and pleasure in their
home environments through par-
ticipating in our gardening pro-
gram.”*
