Nerd Live in the jazz lane AZZ lives on new releases from Dizzy Gillespie, Van- couver’s-own Creatures Of Habit and Peter Appleyard. Creatures Of Habit — Live in Montreal, Justin Time Re- cords/CBC 1991 Hyped as a jazz quintet able to say something interesting by play- ing in the mainstream and fusion fields, the live session captured here proves the buzz on this band. Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW The Vancouver musicians plac- ed first at the 1990 Alcan jazz Competition. This live release is a result of the win and documents the concert that took Creatures of Habit to the top. The tunes — including an ex- plosive take of Chick Corea’s Matrix — offer a seamless session of jazz. Saxophonist Bill Runge has brought together bassist Rene Worst, drummer Don Powrie, pianist Ross Taggart and guitarist Ron Samworth for the project. Samworth’s guitar style — some may be familiar with it through Lunar Adventures — is oddly- phrased and airy. It's an effective trarning device and provides an abstract contest for his fellow bandmates’ bewitching excur- sins. Creatures Of Habit celebrate the CD release with performances at the Glass Slipper, May 2 and May 3. The shews start at 9 p.m. Tick- cts are $7. To reserve seats call 682-0706 or 877-0066. Peter Appleyard — Barbados Heat, Concord Jazz 1990 The mallet-meister pulled off a marvellous set with Moe Koffman at the Centennial over the weekend. A taste of the contemporary Ap- pleyard may be had on Barbados Heat, the first of two releases drawing on a live session recorded at the Frank Collymore Hall in Barbados during February 1990. A stellar quintet gathered to br- ing life to a well-chosen set of jazz standards including Ellington's Take The ‘A’ Train, Satin Doll and Caravan. Joining Appleyard on this outing are fellow Benny Gocdman Sextet alumni Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar and Butch Miles on drums. Roun- ding out the group are Rick Wilkins on tenor sax and bass player Major Holley. The quality of the recording is simple and superior, captured on digital audio tape, direct to two track. The set sizzles. and asa listener you get the delightful sense of being in the middle of it all as the riffs spark across the stage. Dizzy Gillespie and the United Nation Orchestra — Live at the Royal Festival Hall, Justin Time Records/Enja Records 1990 Klioegman has performed for several companies From page 28 strong follawing. Two years ago he directed The Dresser for North Vancouver Community Players, which won the provincial finals at the B.C. Festival of Plays and was the se- cond runner-up at the national competition. It’s obvious that Kloegman is excited about his latest venture, despite the enorrnous difficulties of running a non-profit theatre company. First of all, he has to fit rehear- sals around a full-time job. Then there’s the usual set of hardships most community-based theatre groups face, including shelling out big bucks for rent (Station Street charges roughly $1,000 a week), and the ongoing challenge of at- tracting publicity. “But isn’t this fun?’’ Kloegman turns to Edwards and laughs. The balloon-cheeked legend with the crooked trumpet blows a live twister.
