Autoplan coverages

BY THE end of this month,
thousands of B.C. motorists
will have visited Autoplan
brokers to renew their vehi-
cle insurance.

The renewal process itself is
usually fairly brief. You take the
pink APV 1 form received from
ICBC into the broker who calls up
your policy on a computer termi-
nal, updates the information, col-
lects the premium and issues you
the new plate decal.

While the Autoplan renewal
process is designed to provide
quick and efficient service, you
may wish to take a few extra
minutes with the broker to see if
the policy meets your needs as it
is, or if there are any changes that
need to be made.

and, as court-awarded settlements
continue to rise, many are now
raising it to $2 million.

Next, make sure you have
Underinsured Motorist Protection.
This is a low-cost, optional charge
for you, your spouse or depen-
dents living in your household in

the event any of you are injured
by a motorist who doesn’t have
enough third party liability
coverage to pay for the claim.
With UMP, you're covered up to
the third party coverage limit on
your own Autoplan policy.

If you have a youngster or any
other relative who does not insure
a vehicle and who does not live in
your household, ask your broker
about the special Underinsured
Motorist Policy that can provide
them up to $1 million in coverage.

Next week, we'll touch briefly
on comprehensive and collision
coverages and begin a guided tour
of the APV 1 so you can check
your various coverages. Then,
when it’s time to renew, you can
make any adjustments right there
at your broker’s counter.

mis-rated (for example, rated for
pleasure use only but actually used
to commute to and from work),

check is your Third Party Legal
Liability coverage. This is the
amount ICBC will pay to com-
pensate someone in the event you
injure them or damage their prop-
erty.

While the minimum amount of
third party coverage you must
have in B.C. is $200,000, most
people have at feast $1 million
