THOUSANDS OF people become new customers of ICBC each year. Many are brand new motorists dealing with auto insurance for the first time. Others are new to B.C. and to our public auto insurance system. Whether you belong to either group, you should know some of the basics about auto insurance in B.C. This week, especially for the new drivers, we'll look at the various coverages. Next week, we'll explain some of the dif- ferences between ICBC and private auto insurance for the benefit of those people who have just arrived Ken Hardie INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA from other parts of Canada. The Insurance Corporation of B.C.. is a provincial crown cor- poration and is owned by the citi- zens of British Columbia. Since 1974, it has provided B.C. motorists with a basic auto in- surance package which must be purchased before a vehicle can be licensed for use on the road. ICBC auto insurance is called Autoplan, and is sold by over 800 ‘private, independent insurance brokers across B.C. The basic package includes $200,000 in third party jegal liabil- ity coverage, in case you cause an accident that injures someone or damages their property. It also in- cludes ‘‘no-fault”’ accident benefits which can pay up to $150,000 in medical and rehabilitation benefits, death benefits and/or compensation for lost earnings, no matter who is at fault in an acci- dent. Inverse liability pays for loss or damage to a B.C. vehicle if it is involved in an accident in Canada or the U.S. where the right to re- cover losses is legally prohibited, or if the person responsible for the accident lives in one of those places. Your basic insurance package also protects you against uninsured and unidentified motorists when the accident occurs on a highway in the Yukon or Northwest Territories, or in states in the U.S.A. that do not have a pian similar to ours. There are other coverages which you can buy from ICBC or from any private insurer willing to sell them to you. They include increas- ed third party liability coverage — most people in B.C. carry at least $1 million. Comprehensive coverage in- cludes protection in the event your windshield is cracked or broken, all or part of your vehicle is stolen or vandalized or if it catches fire or is damaged by falling deb:is. Col- lision coverage wiil pay for the damage you cause to your own vehicie. ICBC also sells underinsured motorist. protection, which can protect you up to your own third party limit if you are injured by a motorist not carrying enough coverage to pay for the loss you’ve suffered. Other optional insurance Products include a limited depreciation policy for new vehi- cles and loss of use coverage which will reimburse you in the event that you have to pay for a substitute vehicle. Motorists can also purchase short term license and insurance for periods of six to 11 months. All brokers can supply you with brochures which explain the dif- ferent types of auto insurance pro- tection and services available from ICBC.
