NEPTUNE TERMINALS POLLUTION | Standards acceptabie to whom? Dear Editor: Reading your article of August 23, Expansion request gets ingry response, 1 am sceptical of the remarks of North Vancouver Ci- ty’s Development Services coor- dinator that with the enlarged pot- ash storage arrangements proposed for Neptune Terminals, pollution would be controlled ‘to acceptable standards.’’ Acceptable to whom? Presum- ably, to some standard set by gov- ernment officials; but years of ex- perience have shown that Neptune is unable to control the dust from its coal piles and present potash storage to a level ‘acceptable’ to nearby residents. Aside from that, I am both angry and aggrieved to read your report of Ald. Clark’s remarks Alderman should support Lower Lonsdale residents Dear Editor: North Vancouver City Alderman Rod Clark’s comments on the proposed rezoning at Neptune Terminals cannot pass unnoticed. Despite the fact that not one response in favor of this develop- Ment was received by Neptune, Ald. Clark states that he is inclined to support the application because“...we have to weigh the impact on our little community.” Whose community is he talking about? It is quite obvious from his voting record on council that Ald. Clark does not care in the least about the Lower Lonsdale area; it would appear that he would be quite happy to see Lower Lonsdale transformed into a wasteland of concrete high rises coated with coal and potash dust. I would suggest that Ald. Clark keep in mind that people in Lower Lonsdale are part of the City of North Vancouver and have as much right to have their views Expansion would biock NV views Dear Editor: As a taxpayer and resident of the City of North Vancouver, I take exception to the planned ex- pansion of Neptune Terminals’ bulk storage facilities. Most of the people who choose to live on the North Shore, from Deep Cove to Lions Bay, do so for a variety of reasons. There is, however, one common denominator that we all enjoy and that is the view of the water, har- bor and city skyline. We read and hear constantly of new high-rise apart- ment/condominiums being plan- ned or constructed, further eradicating our al- ready-diminishing view and now this, a new larger bulk storage fa- cility for Neptune Rulk Terminals (Canada) Ltd. 1, for one, de not wish to lose my view. Hopefully there are others who feel the same as I do and are prepared to let our city government know by speaking out against this proposal rather than sitting back apathetically as our views disappear forever. Hopefully, it’s not too late! J.W.A. Crawford North Vancouver taste. considered as any other residents. Perhaps he would not be so hasty to support high rises and potash storage if they were to be in his neighborhood. Fiona McQuarrie North Vancouver that ‘...it boils down to our re- sponsibility as a port. We have to weigh off the impact on our little community.’* Mr. Clark himself lives a good distance from the dust of Neptune and the noise of the trains. But as an alderman, he was elected by the people of North Vancouver to study and defend the interests of all of them, and to speak on their behalf should their interests con- flict with those of other levels of government, developers or big business. Of late, Mr. Clark’s record in this respect has been questionable. Mr. Clark’s constituency is the city, not the port. The interests of the Port of Vancouver are most capably espoused by the businesses using it and by the Port Authority, none of which need his help. The people of North Vancouver do. S.
