Training for people over
45 years old was lacking

“He wanted to do something
the university wouldn't do,” said
Turner. “He knew by the next
decade there would be 65% of
our population over the age of
45. He looked around and saw
that there wasn’t any training for
people over the age of 45 who
might have unique learning difli-
culties.”

Whereas the employment
training division teaches people
who are trying to reinvent them-
selves, Joan Fleischer manages
the business management divi-
sion for those who need to learn

upwards of $2,000 fora us-
tomized package of computer,
math and language courses.

According to Fleischer,
mature graduates need not worry
about younger competitors.

“Employers are looking for
people with life experiences as
well as computer, business or
accounting skills. They’re look-
ing for stable employees as
opposed to a younger person
who will jump from job to job.

“The calls | get are saying ‘I
want a mature worker.’ That’s
the key phrase — a mature
worker.”

full-time courses.

One example, Fleischer saiti,
was a hospital nurse who need-
ed terminology and computer
upgrades to be qualified to work
in a doctor's office.

“These people don’t necessar-
ily have a lack of confidence,
they just need major upgrading
skills. A woman who has been
out of the work force for five
years is totally outdated now,”
said Fleischer.

In a typical Lotus class, she
said, there would be sorneone
who used spreadsheets manually
for many years and now wants
to move to computers; one who
is good with accounting and
wants to learn spreadsheets; and
another who wants to learn out
of personal interest.

Those in Fleischer’s business
division pay the whole tuition.
Costs can run from $197 for one
