SPORTS LOCAL ACE BATTLES FLU AND OPPONENTS weyaseelan takes tennis title UNSEEDED AND battling the flu, local tennis ace Sonya **There’s no way she would have Jeyaseelan went on to become the first Canadian ever to lost ‘0 Edwards normally,’’ said win the under-12 title at the December Fiesta Bowl U.S. na- tional junior tennis championships in Tempe, Ariz. Jeyaseelan easily defeated Maria Cole of Santa Cruz, Calif., 4-6,6- 1,6-1 in the girls’ under-12 singles final, despite suffering from the flu in the early rounds. Jeyaseelan said she felt good about the win: ‘‘I deserved to win because I worked really hard,’’ said the Upper Lynn elementary student. ‘‘I was weak and tired but I played aggressively. Cole wasn’t tough to beat.” Father and coach Reggie said that after playing an emotional game Jeyaseclan was physically drained and tired. She went on to win the first two rounds of the Copper Bowl tournament but lost ‘Tough road’ for tennis dad REGGIE JEYASEELAN has 2 tough road ahead of him. The father of an up-and-coming 12-year-old tennis star, Jeyaseelan quit a good paying full-time job to manage daughter Sorya’s career. A tennis tournament here, a tennis tournament there, it all adds up. “Our main problem now is try- ing to get funds to pay for practice and travel costs,'’said Reggie. With four coaches to pay and a host of other expenses that come: with training, Reggie is hoping that Sonya’s excellent record will either catch the eye of a private company or the Canadian government. Unlike European countries that spend millions of dollars on gifted tennis players and other athletes, Canada hasn’t contributed a penny _ towards Sonya’s career, he said. “The German tennis federation spends an enormous amount of money on people like Boris Becker and Stefie Graf by the time they're 15. That’s before they’ve (athletes) even earned a penny.” Tennis B.C. has contributed small grants of $50 and $100 but Reggie considers that ‘*peanuts.”” “St’s a cough road from now on for me,’’he says.
