Last Monday night at Denis Forristal’s Westin Bayshore, charisma reigned supreme! _ Without a doubt, former prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau was king. , He was in town for two days to flog his new book, Memoirs, and for a conference and Q&A session with accredited media at UBC on Tuesday morning. The lineup to get into the Westin Bayshore parking lot for his $53.50-per-person fundraising reception for Canadian Parks and Wilderness on Monday night was unbelievable. - The lineup at the bars was also phenomenal. His ever-faithful dentist, Dr. Harry Gelfant and wife Maxine Gelfant, the fashion world’s Wen- dy Grant, the Grits’ Paul Manning and Ken Till, CBC producer Susan Wetmore, West Van water- front dweller Yulanda Faris, fashion doyen Kay Alsop and VanMag’s Valerie Gibson were all there clutching their books... Mr. T. was obviously pleased and surprised with the turnout and the attention here in the colonial . backwoods of B.C. As his handlers opened the doors wide to the Westin Bayshore ballroom, the words, ‘‘Oh my gosh!” sprang from his lips!... I must say, he looked very well. He'd spent the afternoon refreshing himself by working out in the hotel’s beautiful pool and health club and it paid off. He looked rested, pink-cheeked and in remarkable shape. After all the adulation and the book-signing, Pierre and 19 of his closest friends adjourned to dine copies of Pierre Trudeau’s new bock, Memoirs.
