Garde JUDGES in the North Shore Gardens '86 contest believe they've seen it all. One entrant’s garden came with a nesting bird. This wouldn’t be so unusual ex- cept for the fact that the garden was on the 15th floor of an apart- ment, and the bird was perched in a potted tree in an enclosed balcony. “It was really charming,’’ said garden judec Diana Belhouse. “The mother bird was there while we were judging.” The contest, sponsored by West Vancouver Garden Club, has at- tracted more than 80 applicants. SORTING ENTRIES Judges have been visiting North Shore gardens for the past three months, averaging five gardens iwice a week. They are now in the process of sorting through the apolicants and deciding on the winners to be an- nounced Sept. 2-4. About 150 people will be invited to the awards banquet, ta be held at 7:30 p.m. at Delbrook Com- munity Centre’s Tamarix Room. “We were absolutely delighted with the response,"’ said Belhouse. “We've seen every kind of garden imaginable from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove, from the sea level to the high british Proper- ties.”” Belhouse said she was surprised Nn by North Shore gardening talent, and pleased with the skill gardeners showed in making the best use of their gardens. “Most of the lots have interest- ing topography and people have had to make the most of natural obstacles. There was an oriental garden with a stream and rocks had been placed so that it featured the stream,”’ she said. t ‘ wie “(offer expi Monarch furniture is still Western Canada’s largest Vilas dealer.
