the Democratic vice-presidential candidate in the
U.S., the Canadian Labor Congress opening up a
half-dozen top executive positions for women and
Carla Temple so successfully pumping iron, it
should be sweet times for the sisterhood.

Brian Mulroney swears
he’ll force companies seeking
lucrative federal contracts to
hire more women. John
Turner offers slightly less of
the same, but promises to
politely open the hatch of the
pork barrel for the ladies.

It may even be that if the

Tories are turned back at the
gate to power, it will be
because poor Mulroney is
alienating female voters by
being too smooth, too hand-
some and too charming.

blessing or a curse? He
wasn’t sure yet.

Certainly, most of the

case a handful of years ago.

Surely it can’t be a totally
unrelated development that
women are demanding the
right even to get into a boxing
ring together. In terms of
dignity, it sure beats mud
wrestling.

On the downside, we all
know that most women in the
workforce today aren’t there
for fulfillment, freedom or
equality. They’re there
because they’ve got to make
up for the disaster befalling

their men in the labor
market.
Between 1971 and 1981,

the number of families sup-
ported only by the husband
fell from more than a third to
only 18 per cent. Women
went to work mainly to take

up the slack. That’s what
kept the economic health of
the average family from
deteriorating a lot more than
it did.

Not long ago, Pope John
Paul I! pontificated that
housewives should get a
paycheque — an idea | agree
with 100 per cent, providing
you can afford it. You’ve got
to earn money before you can
pay anyone, a great truth
forgotten by most govern-
ments, and certainly by the
Vatican, which firmly
believes, when @ comes to ac-
tua] power ig an organiza-
tion, that nun means
‘*none’’.

It remains that 70 per cent
of working women are con-
centrated in the service and
retail sectors —- data process-
ing, fast-food, health care.
They serve as secretaries,
waitresses, cleaning women.
Work is hard and boring.
The pay is lousy. _

The weariest statistic of all
is the familiar one about
wages. Women in Canada
earn only 60 per cent of what
men earn.
