C15 - Sumday, May 2, 1982 - North Shore N Photos and story By Ellsworth Dickson Today's feature home is a very special dwellin, gi indeed. Perched on a rock'right on the ocean, Don’ Kavanagh’s house can only be reached via an elevated walkway. With over 6,700 sq. ft., not counting the decks, Don has actually entertained 160 people. When Don was a young lad, he saw a movie call “A Summer Place”. This film imspired him to become an interior designer and he has a number of projects to his credit, including his Deep Cove home. One of the obvious design requirements was, of course, to take advantage of the view of the Cove and up Indian Arm. Another idea was to separate the two levels of entertaining. The three storey structure has the sleeping quarters on the middle floor. The lower level has the bar, billiard and rec room while the top floor has the living, dining and kitchen dens. Don also has separated the pool and sauna activities from the rest of the house. Being on bedrock, the concrete foundation 1s bolted to the rock every 30”. Other design features are the use of the natural cross- ventilation from the sea breeze and the good utilization of natural light. ’ The house took cleven months to build. The construction was facilitated by the building of a trough to slide materials down the steep slope. Some bare statistics are four bedrooms, four bathrooms, four fireplaces, gourmet kitchen, swimming pool, sayna, dock with decp water moorage, double garage off Don's design studio The list is very im- pressive Although the house 1s virtually finished except for adding a few more carpets, Don plans on doing some landscaping to) make the property more park -like sie ening New Doors on the North Shor
