Less smoke, more garbage ?

WARNINGS that banning
backyard burning of garden
refuse in North Vancouver
District will result in
“dumping of garbage”
throughout the municipality
went unheeded Monday
night when council formally
abolished fall and _ spring
outdoor fires.

However, District's new
fire bylaw prohibiting
backyard burning of garden
litter will come into effect
January |, 1983.

Alderman Ernie Crist
forwarded a motion to
change the proposed fire
bylaw amendment so that it
would become effective next
year instead of this October.

“People would have
proper warning,” said Crist.
“And it would be fair.”

But Alderman John Lakes
who has opposed banning
backyard fires since it
became a council issue, said
the prohibition would only
lead to residents dumping
garbage onto District lands.

“] just hope those council
members who vote for this
(ban) will take full
responsibility (for litter in
District),” remarked Lakes.

Council's action to ban
backyard burning of garden
debris follows repeated
complaints from  Dhistnet
residents who argued smoke
from burning leaves and
refuse cause respiratory
illness

And as Lakes summed up,
if outdoor smoke is a health
hazard, then 1t would only be
fair for council to also ban
indoor smoke sources such
as fireplaces

“It appears that leaves are
bad,” said Lakes. “and
fireplaces and barbeques are
good.”
