B4 - Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1981 - North Shore News To play Cosmos Canada’s World Cup soccer team will meet the New York Cosmos in Vancouver October 7 in the Labatt’s Canada/Cosmos Challenge at Empire Stadium. The Canadian squad will use the match and another October 3 in Calgary against New York to tune up for the second round of World Cup qualifying © matches in Honduras in November. Canada advanced to the second round by virtue of finishing first im its group with Mexico and the United States in the opening round of the CONCACAF play. Team Canada will report for training September 24 in Vancouver with such NASL stars as 1981 North American Player of the Year Mike Stojanovic of San Diego Sockers, Wes McLeod of Tampa _ Bay Rowdes, Canadian team captain Robert Iarusci of New York, goalies Zekkjo Bilecki of Tulsa and Bobby Lenarduzzi and Gerry Gray of Vancouver Whitecaps. Canada finished first in its group inthe first round with one win and three ties for five points; Mexico was second with one win, one loss and two ties for four points and the United States finished with one win, two losses and a draw for three points. Canada_ reached the second round for the first time in 1976 finishing fourth overall as Mexico won the group to advance to the World Cup finals in Argentina in 1978. Only once in the past 30 years has Mexico failed to win the group. This year however, two teams will advance to the finals in Spain in 1982. One of the highlights of the Canada/Cosmos, Challenge in Vancouver will ‘be the introduction of Canada’s 1958 Worid Cup eam - the first to venture forth in World Cup play. Labatt’s Breweries are undertaking the entire cost of sponsoring the Canadian team with an injection of $1 million. Following the Canada/Cosmos Challenge the Canadian team wiil travel to Central America for a series of exhibition mat- ches prior to the second round of CONCACAF play.
