A18-Sunday News, November 16, 1980 WV Arts Council seeks new ideas The West Vancouver Community Arts Council held a workshop on Sunday, October 19, entitled Arts Forum ’80 (West Vancouver, Wherefore Art Thou?) in the Memorial Library. For seven hours a good number of citizens turned out to work on ways to reshape and improve the arts in West Vancouver. John Anderson of the Cultural Services Branch of the provincial government and Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys were in attendance. The workshop was led and facilitated by Sandra and Gary Robinson of EM Sciences, a management consulting firm specializing in organization develop- ment, goal setting, team building and the hke. They helped organize the ideas and establish procedures for discussion and = action- planning. John Baker, president of the West Vancouver Community Arts council, opened the meeting with a series of questions: ~ What is the Arts Council doing for the community? What is the community doing for the Council? Since there is a wealth of talent in West Vancouver, why does so little of it take any interest in the arts and the Arts Council? Why is there little funding for the arts in West Van- couver? How is it possible for a Community Plan not to include any facilities for the visual and performing arts? What does the community expect from the Arts Councu? These and many other quesuons were raised and addressed at Arts Forum 8&0 The first part of the morning was spent working in small groups looking at “things as they are” in the West Van arts scene: the things that are working weil and the things that are missing or are not working well. Then the forum progressed to “thinking of things as they might be” — looking ahead two years, what one might hope for. A comprehensive list of possible goals was drawn up and the items that were tops on most people’s personal lists were identified. In the afternoon four of these most important goals were examined with an eye to actually starting work on realizing them. This phase was calied action planning, and the four chosen goals were; 1. The reorganization or revitalization of the West Vancouver Community Arts Council. 2. The improvement of arts in education in the West Vancouver schools. 3. The establishment of a community coordinator for the arts in West Vancouver. 4. The establishment of an Arts Centre for West Vancouver. The Community § Arts Council is most interested in hearing from members of the pubhc who would hke to work on any of the above projects, add any ideas to the problem of revitalizing the arts in West Vancouver, yoin the Arts Council or attend ifs meetings For any of the above cal) John Baker at 922-1445 or Daphne Trivett at 922-6683 The next Community Arts Council meeting is at Kice Wyck.
