AxOT Cl ug gens Voce ct ea an hed A21-Sunday News, Febreary 17, 1980 mailbox Dear Editor: February the 18th, 1s much more than Election Day! It is also “Heritage Day”. Since 1973 it has been proclaimed by five provinces, two territories and the mayors of many cities as a time to celebrate our social and en- vironmental roots, our landscapes, views, street- scapes and historic streets and buildings. How Heritage Canada, an independent voluntary association such as_ the National Trusts of England, whose Board is chaired by Pierre Berton, has sponsored a Campaign to have this third Monday in February declared a National Holiday. Coming as it does in the long stretch between January and the Easter holidays, while children are still within the school year, means that young people can be organized and involved in this celebration of our non- political history. Encouraged by a great deal of support for the idea (several Bills have already been introduced in Pensions only Dear Editor: I know where the Federal) Govt. can save a few million dollars a year before they go down the drain as I have heard by economic advisers. First is the old age pen- sions. This was a Liberal gimmick many years ago before an election to gain a few more votes. I'm all for pensions for senior citizens who need it but certainly not for everyone. | think it is a shame to have some of our pensioners eating dog food as I've heard while paying millions to people who do not need it. If a means test were taken or pensions paid only to those who qualify by their income tax return, it would eliminate almost half of those now receiving pen- sions. Only those who could not qualify would have any objection tothe above. Pensions could be in- creased by fifty per cent to the needy and still save twenty five per cent of the total now paid. Family allowances could be established in the same manner. In both the above instances a lot of this money is wasted on _ liquor, Cigarettes, beauty parlors and gas for a second car. This is not taking it from Parliament) Heritage Canada is continuing to press for the declaration of a national public holiday in mid-February to celebrate National Heritage Day. To put this in a bit of per- spective: Canada is well down the list when it comes to the total number of public holidays a year. We have only eight. Italy has nine. Germany has eleven. The United States, which also has nine, celebrates George Washington's birthday on the third Monday in Celebrate Heritage Day February -- the same date as our National Heritage Day. No major western European country has fewer holidays than Canada. Several have more. If you wish to indicate your support for this idea, contact your Member of Parliament - you will know who it will be on the day after Heritage Day. Common Sense (name supplied) North Vancouver Canada looks good Dear Editor: Canada is a_ beautiful country. We have tremendous amounts of resources, wheat, mining and other major resources. But still people are :om- plaining about high prices, inflation and gas prices, etc. ~ When you think about it, me, you and all the rest of Canadians are very for- tunate, if you compare the your best choice ... starving children and adults — starving, sick and homeless — in Africa, South America and Asia. If you think seriously, we have so much transportation, food and homes. So next time you think how bad things are, remember this short note.
