Ye rey HOCKEY PLAYERS can now take a well deserved rest now that the Stanley Cup is finished and summer beginning, right? Wrong, according to fitness consultant to the1980 Canadian Olympic Hockey team. H.A. Wagner says summer is the time players should be training to give them a head start on the regular season and an ad- vantage which lasts the whole year. Quick recovery is a must for effective hockey, and a player's recovery system can be developed to optimal levels during the summer. By running, cycling or swimming vigorously for half and hour or so a day, four or five times a week, a player improves his recovery speed so he needs less time bet- ween fast bursts of skating, shifts and periods to reach his peak. Wagner says the exercise will also help the player resist infections, lose heat more efficiently and keep body weight at an optimal level. However, exercise should be taken at a cool time of day, and the athlete should drink lots of water, wear well-fitted and cushioned shoes and run on an even and resilient surface (not concrete). In a close scoring finish, Australian Moyes finished on top with 9,861 points, only slightly ahead of Bob Calvert’s (England) 9,849. Moyes placed second in Jast year’s event and earned the championship in 1978. Finishing third for the second year in a row was Howard Vandall of Alberta with 9,712 points and in fourth was Ken Hiebert of Edmonton with 9,659.
