Seventy years HOWARD and Jenny (Beardsworth) Craig consider themselves just plain family folk. Well, plain they are not, and as family folk they have the right to be proud. Firefighting, the lumber industry, sports, active club memberships, the movies, real estate, and much mor: have helped to shape thei: lives. Not only were they suc- cessful at their careers, but Howard and Jenny were committed, caring parents and community volunteers. This petite, devoted, and elegant lady encouraged her charming, hard-working, and conscientious husband as . together they charted their _. course in life. They met life’s challenges together and reaped the sweet harvest of a well-adjusted, happy, and car- ing family. x Olds, Ytberta i in 1908 was’ not only a rich farming area, :. but also the birthplace of Howard, one of two siblings. Hc had a good childhood and after finishing high ‘school at the age of 17, attended the Mt. Royal Business College at Calgary, ’ Alberta, He graduated in 1927 and took over the man- . agement of his father’s lum- beryard, until he left Olds in 1943. While attending Mt. Royal : . Business College, Howard “ met the love of his life, Jenny, also a “tudent at the college. _. They married in 1930 and : settled j in Olds. Jenny quit ‘-her secretarial position when ”. she married. Howard chuckles as he recalls, “We spent our honey- :moon at the Banff Springs Hotel for $12 per night. The -. spectacular seuting was awe- “some and the food excellent. ‘But you can imagine how we, vas newlyweds, felt when we ‘opened the door to our room ‘and saw two twin beds! Well, Pll tell you, we trotted directly back to the desk and “demanded they rectify that error immediately! They did — by giving us another room.” . “Jenny’s birthplace was Blackburn, Lancashire, England in 1910, one of two children. Her father was 7 d three times during “WWI and was buried in France at age 34, leaving her mother a widow at the young age of 28 with two girls to raise: She never did remarry. ' When Jenn y was 13, her mother brought the two girls ‘to Canada. Since the only . ‘person her mother knew in Canada was a lady in Calgary, that i is where they settled. '« Howard, in 1937, was one of the founders of the Olds * Volunteer Fire Department. Howard remembers: “In *. those days, in winter, the water would freeze on our bodies, as our suits were not ‘water repellent. Fire fighting "‘was.a tough job, but we ‘a fot of homes.” Craigs came to the coast in 1943, to Victoria, B.C. and Howard spent the next 10 vears in real estate. For a short time, he also worked in the Kiwanis Club’s Tea Room at Willows Beach on Vancouver Island. Then in 1953, toward and Jenny decided to relo- cate, and moved to West Vancouver where Howard continued in real! estate for 14 years. But in 1967 the Craigs returned to Victoria where Howard, in addition to selling real estate, worked part time as a projectionist for theatres in Victoria. Standing too close, for so long, to the projection lamps resulted in the loss of Howard’s left eye. After a 30- year career it real estate, Howard retired. The Craigs finally moved back to the North Shore in 1995, The Craigs have always centered their life around family. Daring their years in Victoria, Jenny’s mother, her sister, Ruby, and husband, Bert, all lived close by, and played a huge part in the Craigs’ lives. They had won- derful times together as a family unit, making precious _memories-to last a lifetime. “We took walks ro; ether, sightsccing drives, and pic- nics. They were good umes. I > ‘still enjoy vanilla ice cream with butterscotch topping,” recalls Howard. . “Ruby had a degree in music, so we would gather around the piano and have wonderful times singing songs,” recalls Jenny. Then there were their family pets, Tiger, a Pekingese dog, and Ting-a-ling, a Siamese cat, who got her name from pushing the phone off the cradle when it rang. For six years he was the secretary of the Snooker & Billiards Club of Victoria and Oak Bay, and the presi- dent for one year. He also sat on the Board of Directors of Hollyburn Credit Union for many years. Presently, he is the lead singer of the choir at the care facility where they live. Howard exercises three times a week and sits on the council for the building. He has been a member of the Masonic Order for 55 years. Howard advises young people to: “Be honest and get at least a Grade 12 edu- cation and beyond if you can, get the best education you can.” Jenny’s advice is: “Have lots of patience throughout your life.” Jenny played a lot of ten- nis in her earlier vears, and enjoyed reading, knitting, and gardening. This past June 11, along, with family members, the Craigs celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Howard and Jenny have one daughter, Elaine, four grand- children and three great- grandchildren. The Craigs are still a strong family unit. Time has changed circumstances, but as the family grows, time has also strengthened the family. bond that Howard and Jenny - were so committed to, and started in 1930.
