We will be hearing from a number of experts about our health-care system. We will be considering the pros and cons of a “single tier” system, where hospital care and phiysi- cians” services are paid through our tax dollars, com- pared with a “multi-tiered” system, where some services, at least, are paid for privately by people who can afford it. We will also learn about alter- native medicine, self-care by seniors, how we measure the effectiveness of various treat- ments, and details of the changes taking place within our North Shore health region. At the first session, held on March 16, we heard from Dr. Clyde Hertzman, profes- sor of health care and epi- demiology at UBC, and an expert on population health and human development. He gave us an example of differing levei. of control ove one’s job. A bus driver's work, for instance, involves tight sched- ules, unexpected traffic prob- lems, and sometimes unruly Passengers — none of which can be controlied by the dri- ver. On the other band, a worker at Van Dusen Botanical Garden can make decisions about caring for plants and how to teach visi- tors about different parts of the garden, and thus has more independence in how he does bis job. Dr. Hertzman summarized his findings by emphasizing that we need to be more aware of how stress ailects our health and the impor- tance of carly childhood development on our lifelong health status. It is very impor- tant that a child, during the first seven years of life, has intellectual stimulation and fearns to control his/her behaviour in an acceptable manner. So what does all this tell us seniors living on the North Shore, where our overall ~ health status and income level are among the highest in the country?
