IAN McCulloch is one of rock’s great saysteries..

The mumblin’ Liverpudlian is a chain-smoker who keeps the
tobacco industry on either side of the Adlantic alive. ¥:
singing voice remains strong and clear as ever.

His pipes chiraed for a near-full auidience at. Richard’s 07
Richards Monday night, albeit more than four months late. The
band cancelled its spring tour swing to spend some time in. the *
studio on a greatest hits compilation. . :

From behind his shades, McCulloch delivered ‘classics from”.
the Echo and the Bunnymen repertoire, from “Killing’ Moon”
and “Bring on the Dancing Horses” to “Lips Like Sugar” and the
night’s finale, “Ocean Rain”. Even a newer song like “I Want To
Be There,” which sounds flat on radio, was brought <0 life, main-
ly duc to the sonic craftsmanship of guitarist Will Serge

McCulloch’s between-song banter’ is’ difficult to’ decipher
because of his thick accent and use’ of. colloquialisms.: H
however, heard loud and ‘clear by ali when. he admonished ‘the:
bartender next to the stage to handle drink glasses quicter' during
the opening of “Ocean Rain”...

McCulloch and co. have been tagged | as an’80s
but it’s obvious they still have something to offer. Maybe. they’
find themselves playing arenas in North America o
fans discover: the genuine article. :
