Lionsview seniors receive grant NORTH VANCOUVER'’'S Lionsview Seniors’ Connections Committee has received a $29,418 grant from the federal government to continue to develop a network cf organizations that would reconnect isolated seniors with the North Shore community. The connections committee is sponsored by the Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society and in- cludes representatives from seniors centres, service organizations and: churches. _ In addition to maintaining an inventory ‘of selevant organiza- tions and promoting education and public information programs, the committee will pian ap- rroaches to identify and reach out io isolated seniors. The project, which involved over 100 participants, will provide long-term benefits for seniors at risk. The grant was secured through the federal New Horizons pro- gram, which was established by the department of health and welfare in 1972 to help Canadian seniors plan, run and take part in useful activities of their own choosing. The program, called Careers for Older Workers, will start soon and is open to men and women aged 45 and older who are cur- rently collecting unemployment insurance. “This program is different because it provides the time and the expert assistance to explore all the options and alternatives that are really there,’’ said David Hanley, project manager. **We won't be doing dry and tedious research ... we'll be out in the world being practical and, I hope. taking some more enjoy- ment from life.’° According to government reports, older workers are facing a difficult, time. Although their unemployment rates are marginal- ly lower than those of other age groups, the effect on them of be- ing unemployed is often more severe. They segularly face age discrimination, disruption ta future plans, economic security, friendships and family relations. Hanley said Careers for Older Workers offers a unique combina- tion of career counselling and ex- ploration, direct introduction to employers, four weeks of on- the-job work experience, recre- ational programs and English lan- guage training. “Em especially proud of the hieh calibre of professional staff that we have been able to attract to work in this project,’ said Hanley.
