They were the real ones,” quipped the Bowen Island resident. About three minutes after leaving a pay phone on Bay Street near the ferry terminal, Smith heard the phone booth explode. Bits of debris were sent flying. “It made me think about my being alive. It was a scary thing,” said Smith, a real estate agent. Smith used the phone tor 10 minutes at approximately 3 om. He didn’t notice any- thing unusual. The phone exploded right after he hung up and crossed the street. Smith was not injured. Wednesday, April 14, 1999 — North Shore News ~ 5 Bridge gridlock solutions Expanded Seymour crossing mulled as LGB upgrade looms Martin Millerchip News Reporter martin@nsnews.com THE potential for traffic gridlock on the Second Narrows Bridge wnile the Lions Gate Bridge is being upgraded has spurred several cre- ative ideas to alleviate congestion. The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, the Seymour planning group (Seymour residents working on the ercation of a new Seymour Official Community Plan) and the district's. “Transportation Advisory Committee have all come up with suggestions. They include: B extending the Dollarton Highway on-ramp to link with the Main Street on-ramp; B adding a third lane to the Seymour River bridge on the Dollarton. Two lanes would run west, one handling Vancouver-bound traffic and the other through traffic towards North Vancouver. a complete reworking of the Mount Seymour interchange with a new flyover; @ an expanded SeaBus or new ferry service to a Seymour dock that might connect to both North and West Vancouver as well as Vancouver; @ surfacing the existing rail bridge over the Sevmour to accommodate cars; Ba re-use of the Grantham Bridge to accom- modate through traffic; Ba new or temporary Seymour Bridge in the Spicer Street area. Council unanimously supported Coun. Trevor Carolan’s motion Monday directing staff to review all access route options and costs, Carolan told the News that the focus of his motion was the planned Dollarton Bridge upgrade, but that because of the anticipated tratfic tie-ups when Lions Gate Bridge repairs are finally undertaken there could be a berter intermediate solution. He said that it’s possible the funding of an upgraded Seymour crossing could be put to the voters in November as a referendum. The district plans to realign what will become a four-lane Dollarton Highway when the recently rezvacd CanOxy lands are devel- oped. While CanOxy will pay approximately 50% of the realignment and construction costs of the highway, opponents of the deal point out the highway will still terminate at a two-lane bridge that is expected to cost $6 million to upgrade to four lanes. While Coun. Ernie Crist supported the staff report he said he would lobby against funding a new Dollarton Bridge. “We will move an existing bottleneck a few feet for $6 million. The road we have to pursue is public transit,” said Crist. Plant Your Summer Flowering Garden Now taped an explosive device across the coin box of the telephone. West Vancouver’ Police Sgt.
