When her daughter Sydney was born with cerebral palsy, Anita began working to ensure that people with dis- abilities were given every opportunity to live in and par- ticipate in their communities, rather than being segregated in institutions such as Woodlands School. Anita was a founding member of the North Shore Disability Resource Centre, and served on their board of directors for over 20 years. During this time, she helped establish the first group home on the North Shore for chil- dren with high-care needs, . Quinton House, and worked to ensure that these children were integrated into the pub-— : lic school system. To this day, Anita has com- mitted herself to improving services for people of all ages, and particularly to encourage women to be involved in their community, through political and other volunteer work. As an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada since 1960, she chaired the B.C. Women’s Liberal Commission and sat on the National Women’s Liberal Commission. Over the years, Anita has volunteered with the United Way, the Kinsmen Mothers’ March, and the B.C. Association for Community Living. She has just completed her second term as president of the BCACL, which is a feder- ation of 83 agencies serving people with ertior rental disabilities and their families. She also helped found Family Net, an advocacy group whose purpose is to protect and enhance the Community Living movement throughout B.C.
