Press Council has adopted a new set of guidelines for handling complaints against newspapers. The council’s new chair- man, Ted Hughes, QC, says the new Code of Practice is timely “because it will help set ethical standards for the newspaper industry on the eve of. the millennium, as well as give the public a sense of what they should expect from their newspapers.” The new code, which replaces one adopted in 1983 when the Press Council elays ~ needs while at the same time Q coordinating the service as a whole... The new code is the prod- uct of more than a year of consultation between council and its more than 120 mem- ber newspapers, and is designed to act as a guideline for council directors when adjudicating compiaints. The new code was adopt- ed at the directors’ May 14 mecting of council and was issued formally on Monday, June 15.
