Up-an and-comer Reine Rai knows this well. The 25-year-old North Van resident recently returned from New York where she picked up an.award —- not for her work but for promoting her work, ‘The contest was co-s sored by Nikon and PI oto District. News (PDN) maga- . zine'and was open to profes- sional. photographers from across North America, With the award came a full- color.ad in the magazine val- ued at: US$6,000, and a new Nikon N9G' and 28- 70mm lens.. Mihtla is hoping the award will also bring business. “Pm getting more and more jabs each year,” said the Emily Carr grad. “There's a lor of interest in my work but nothing comes immediately.” Already she has gotten cails from ‘a potential client in ~;fenosylvania and 3 stock agency in Boston. Both com- panies contacted her after see- ing the notice of her award in the Octaber issue of PDN. Another call came from a +--fhotographer who wanted fo assist her but, said Mihtla, “: this time I don’t need an assis- tant.” What she does need is work. That’s what the promo- tion is for. And that’s why she came up with her “id She came up with its design °92' while on scholarship at s San Francisco Ari Instirute, which counts as famous alumni Ansel’) Adams and = Annie Leibovitz. It started with the idea of a pop-up beok, bur Mihtla did- n’t want to cut up her photos, What she came up with was a hand-bound photo book with five stand-up images inside and accordion binding “zhat makes a cool kind of noise when opened.” “It’s a desk piece. It’s sculp- tural. It’s meant to be played with,” says its creator. The design is simple — just glue, string, cardboard, paper and photos — and effective. Her photo books helped land her an assignment shooting Elizabeth Taylor in Vancouver last year and a job on a film set in Munich in this coming February. Her plans for the future are ambitious: “I want to do National Geographic,” she said.
