Sportsmen's club leaves Ambleside

FIVE months after
being told to vacate,
the Capilano Sports-
men’s Club left its
municipally owned
Ambleside club-
house and shooting
range.

Now, the West Vancouver
Youth Outreach Program

will move in. The prospect
thrills program coordinator

Although plans for the
youth outreach program
have not been finalized.
Applebaum expects there to
be a Jounge. employment
program, and counselling
available.

Originally, the municipal-
ity asked club members to
vacute the premises by the
end of 1995. Club members
refused.

Feb. 7. when the District of
West Vancouver filed a writ
of summons in B.C,
Supreme Court naming the
Capilano Sportsmen's Club
as defendant.

West Vancouver sought
an injunction to restrain club
members and guests from
using the premises and dam-
ages for trespass and costs.

Although both sides had
dug themselves in a for a
court battle, the dispute fell
short of being heard before a
judge.

Coules said clib members
gave up their fight for the
premises after they failed to
locate documents members
said proved the shooting
range and clubhouse
belonged to them.

The club was located at
the Ambleside location for
44 years.

Coules said she extended
an offer to build and donate a
5,000-square-foot building
to the municipality for the
youth outreach program, but
the parks board rejected the
offer.

Coules remains upset that
her club members and the
youth in the cadets and
Scouts groups who used the
facility have been tossed out,

“It doesn't sit well with
parents as taxpayers, as par-
ents of youth and members
of the Capilano Sportsmen's
Club.” she said.

The outreach centre has
been lodged in a 56-square-
metre (600-square-foot)
cabin adjacent to the
Capilano club.
