In the most populist accumula- tior of art imaginable, we witnessed the democratic jux- taposition of works by profes- sional, emerging, and recreational artists. From Ron Woodall’s acutely detailed documentation of vanishing barns and homesteads to Blair Drawson’s “naive’’ deco-Modigliani flapper, from Graham Gilmore’s pseudo-didac- tic “Pop’’-schooner to Robert Clothier’s Picasso-esque metal sculpture, we were provided an admittedly all-too-diminutive smattering of works by well-known North Shore artists. From the bold nudes of Bevil Conway, a young artist just begin- ning his studies, to the technically accomplished tryptic of Lisa Klepak, a third-year Emily Carr student with studies at Cap Col- lege under her belt, we were given ample evidence of the emergence of fresh blood. As for the representation of works by recreational artists and amateurs... well, to paraphrase Will Rogers, you couldn't throw a stone blindfolded without knock- ing one down. The juried exhibit at the Ferry Building was personally disap- pointing, not so much because of any inherent deficiency in the works themselves — some of which were superlative — as because the range of works selected proved somewhat narrow and unimaginative. , Sad to say, it is doubtful that a reluctance on the part of the ad- judicator to stray from the hallow- ed realms of the conventional will be seen as the cause of this cir- cumstance. In any case, and with regard to the future direction of the festival as a whole, one would hope that the general public wiil have had its See Grand page 44 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY ff you have experience in art or education, enjoy working with people of all ages and have two mornings/ afternoons available per week starting in September, we're looking for you as.a Gallery tour guide.
