WHO dragged loyalty into this? If it must be known, certain members of the Vancouver media did in all the journalistic kerfuffle over Wayne retzky’ 's move from Los Angeles to St. Louis. _fhere was this criticism that he was that made hae ishes and aggran- the growingly disorganized and sada Kings. How quaint. Had they not noticed that loyalty has become an outdated word in professional sport? Indeed, inasmuch as sport is held up as a microcosm of the real the world, isn’t it just part of what we are pleased to cali the market cconomy? Spectator Certainly. Greed is good. Loyalty? Forget it. The only loyalty currently in vogue today is to one’s own best inter- ests. There are, of course, exceptions tu the rule. But you don't need an adding machine to count them. All of which brings us back to the Gretzky critics. Would any one of them in the position of working for a firm on the business skids, tum down an opportunity to make more money with a company on the rise? Of course not. Which is exactly what Gretzky did. Before he leaves the scene, he wants a chance at being part of a fitth Stanley Cup winner. Nothing wrong with that, With the Blues — espe- cially if they make one or two more deals to beef up their scoring —- he'll have that chance. With the Kings, no chance at all. Actually, he did them a favor, inas- much as St. Louis had to part with three young prospects and a first round draft choice in order to land him. He could have played out the season in L.A. and then signed with another team. And the Kings wouldn't have got diddly as compensation. Loyalty — or, actually, lack of it — has become a two-way street in ro sport ever since the arrival of free agency. In the bad, not-so-old days, loyalty went only one way. The reserve clause bound the player to his team for life; or for as tong as the owner wanted to keep him around before trading him, firing him or sending hiri to the minors. Before free agency found its recent way into hockey, Gretzky found out the hard way about the one-way nature of loyalty. That's when cash- strapped Peter Pocklington sold him to the Kings. Now the skate, so to speak, is on the other foot. But as players move from team to team with ever-increasing frequen- cy, and as some team owners all but match them in moving teams from city to city, and all team owners keep raising the price of admission. the one remaining source of loyalty is sorely tested. That would be the paying customer, whose capacity for punishment seems infinite, but whose foyalty remains undiminished. When and if that loyalty goes the same way as loyalty everywhere else has gone, lis- ten for the choking noise. It just may be the death rattle of pro sport as we know it.
