THE CAPILANO College Blues men’s soccer team gave a gutsy performance last Wednesday night at Swangard Stadium as they beat BCIT in the fifth-annual President's Cup match 3-2. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter Playing most of the second half down two players due to red-card ejections, the Blues not only kept pace with the Cougars but mounted most of the offensive challenges in the half. The winning goal was pure magic, as Blues’ players turned a 35-yard free-kick into a display of soccer wizardry. With five minutes left in the deadlocked match, Blues’ midfielder Greg Burkett touch passed the free kick to the left of the Cougars’ wall to a Cap forward who turned and crossed the ball through the crease. An acrobatic header by Blues’ midfielder Anthony Alvere put the ball past keeper Chris Brzica. The Cougars mounted one last offensive challenge in the dying seconds, but their sole chance went soaring over the Blues’ net. The win — which counts as a regular season victory —- gives the ‘Blues a 3-1-1] record in Presicent’s Cup play. In the early going of last Wednesday's game, it looked like BCIT was the stronger side, as they controlled play with tight midfield marking and precise passing. But midway through the half, the Blues found their stride and began to wear the Cougars down. Romolo Ferrari opened the scor- ing when he took a pass from Blues’ defender Darko Jelic and lobbed a shot over a rushing Brzica. The second Blues’ goal came 10 minutes into the second as Rein Klassen, up from his defensive position, beat Brzica with a low hard shot. Prior to the game, Capilano College president Doug Jardine was honored for his part in the cre- . ation of the challenge match between the two schools. Jardine is retiring as president at the end of the schoc! year. Shaw Cabie will televise the game on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. |THE...
