RAY MONK is one of

the wineries who had

the sense to start
developing quality wines
from grapes adapted to the
slightly harshet microcli-
mates of B.C. before the
“trade winds” blew the over-
subsidized industry off the’
niap.

As a result, they are now one
of the most reliable.producers of
sound, everyday drinking wines
like this one: a touch off-dry,
slightly lower in alcohol, pleas-
antly fruity and eminently drink-
able on spring or summer after-
noons. These are the kind of

wines you discover at small gar-
den-gate wineries in Germany
and Austria, meant for casy
drinking in good company.

The kindest thing most wine
writers will say about the tsuna-
mi of bulk qo-op paint remover
that rolls out of Italy under this
name every year is that it is gen-
erally “mild, light and inoffen-
sive,” My experience with the
low-end litres of Velletri will
allow that they're ‘lite,’ but I'd
substitute “characterless” for
“mild” and “downright stroppy”
for “inoffensive,”

Most of it, frankly, tastes like
the vilest yak’s urine stiffened
with stale horse blood, so |
must've looked a bit peaked
when ! got this as a birthday gift.

What a shock: in its “riserva"
incarnation, this is seriously nice
wine; polished and rich, making
the most.of its promiscuous mix
of grapes, a “fine fighting wine”
to rinse down your linguine and
clam sauce or take on a walka-
bout to the neighbors.

As | keep telling Her Nibs:
“This isn’t drinking: it’s a learn-
ing experience.”
