Before Judge William Teacher absences increase NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD TEACHERS IN North Vancouver School District 44 with granted leaves of absence because of med- ical reasons almost doubled this year compared with each of the last four school years. According to staffing statistics presented at an Oct. 22 school board meeting, 21 teachers are off work on medical leaves of absence this year compared with 12 in 1990-91, 13 in 1989-90, 11 in 1988-89, and 10 in 1987-’88. “Is there any reason why the medical leave is practically doubl- ed? It just stands out,’’ said trust- “ee Roy Dungey. Assistant superintendent Pat Bell said he reviewed each of the cases and there were a number of teachers experiencing long-term illnesses. During the question period at the end of the meeting, Norih Vancouver Teachers’ Association representative Linda Watson said _the increased numbers of medical leaves was a province-wide teacher phenomena. *“What we are seeing is a great increase in stress-related leaves. This blip is not due to increased | car accidents,’”’ said Watson. Watson said teachers’ stress in the education system was related to years of fighting with the gov- ernment, class-size difficulties, Stresses in students’ family life ‘that affect schooling, more ESL mainstreaming and new curricula at the provincial level.
