STH COLLEINGS News Reporter First, North Vancouver's Grant Connell, seeded second at the Ca- nadian tennis championship in Toronto, was knocked out by the No. 15 seed, then defending pro- vincial and national Remington Family champs, Susie Fought and Pam Hunter, were ousted by the No. 2 seeds at the North Shore Winter Club. Brian Gyetko won the Sun Life Nationals final after a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Connell on Sunday in a game interrupted by rain on Saturday. It was the first national singles final for Connell, 24, since he captured the Canadian under-18 title. Later that day, Connel! teamed with Mark Greenan of Ontario in the men's doubles finals is down Martin Laurendeau and ” Bonneau of Quebec, 6-2 4). Meanwhile at home, Hunter and her daughter, Fought, of the Hollyburn Country Club, lost the provincial final, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (6-3) for the first time since the Remington championship started in 1988 to Leona and Caroline Sporer. It’s the first provincial win for the Sporers against Hunt- er and Fought in three Remington finals. However, as runners-up last weekend, Hunter and Fought will still be able to have a crack at defending their national title in Toronto on the Labour Day -weekend. Last year at the Interna- tional Remington Family Cham- pionship, the West Vancouver team won a Kiam Finalist Cup after playing the U.S. team. Also going to the national tournament are Jim and his son, Stefano Walker, of North Van- couver. In other tennis news, the Hollyburn Country Club team left this week for the Canadian club team championships in Toronto.
