Consider suntanning risks OUR ANTICIPATION of sum- mer’s long, hot, sunny days brings us outdoors more frequently to soak up some extra rays and the warmth of the sun. Next week from May 7 has been declared Sun Safety Awareness Week in Canada, by the Canadian Dermatology Association, with special emphasis on understanding the previously unrecognized damaging effects of ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. UVA will be the skincare issue of the '90s. Jf you are a sunworshipper, you may want to consider the risks in- volved in suntanning, and begin to take some steps towards a safe tan. To understand why suntanning is dangerous, it is important to be aware that the sun contains invisi- ble ultraviolet (UV) radiation. To achieve a tan, you must be exposed to this radiation which produces melanin in the skin — nature’s skin protection. Ultraviolet radiation consists of three wavelengths, two of which penetrate the ozone layer and reach the earth’s surface — UVB and UVA. UVB light is the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UVA light penetrates more deeply into the skin, causing damage to the skin’s lower layer and adds to UVB damage. UVA is the long-term cause for premature or photo-aging (wrinkles, sagging, and dry, leathery skin) and photosensitivity (a heightened reaction to sunlight). Dermatologists now believe that 80 per cent of skin’s aged appear- ance is directly due to sun (UVA) exposure. Recent studies conducted by Dr. Warwick Morrison of Harvard University show that UVA rays also suppress the immune system, causing a range of ailments from common cold sores to some forms of cancer. UVA can penetrate both glass and summer clothing, some- thing that UVB cannot do. Sunscreens are now available to protect against UVA and UVB radiation. A minimum sun protec- tion factor (SPF) of 1S offers ade- quate protection for most people. Sunscreen should be used all year, daily, as sun damage can occur in any season. A regularly used sunscreen can block out 93 per cent of UVB rays, reducing the incidence of a serious sunburn. Consumers should look for a sunscreen with UVB and broad UVA protection and an SPF factor of at least 15. There is no such thing as a safe tan. It is important to minimize your risk by using a sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and avoiding sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun's rays are most intense. Sun protection for children is especially important as one bad sunburn during childhood can MOTHER'S DAY QUEEN-SIZE SPECIAL double the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Avoid tanning salons and sunlamps. Respect the sun and pamper your skin with proper skincare precautions. If you have any sun- related skincare questions, call your local dermatologist, family doctor, or contact the B.C.
