Capilano-Howe Sound MP Mary Collins was on hand at the West Vancouver Seniors Centre to make the announcement. The Health Planning Project is a two-year program to involve seniors in planning for healthy living on the North Shore. It will study housing, transportation, preventive and wellness programs and more. New facility will bring tennis focus to Whistler From page 39 Ridge is also being expanded with four new trails and a triple chair. Skiers will have access to the Blackcomb Glacier region in Garibaldi Provincial Park, which will increase Blackcomb’s skiable high alpine terrain by 40 per cent. Hugh Smythe, president of Blackcomb, says: ‘‘the glacier region is a huge powder bow! of untracked snow that was previous- ly accessible only to the adven- turesome skier — now it will be open to virtually every level of skier.’’ A new, high-speed quad chair replaces the Jersey Cream chair. Kids Kamp facilities are doubled. On the debit side, Pemberton airport, 20 minutes fron Whistler, will not be open for the ski season due to continuing tests by federal transport department engineers. Ron Moore of AirBC in Van- couver says the airline nas equip- ment ready to start service from Vancouver and Seattle but they are happy to wait until the microwave landing system is properly tuned. Another airline, Hugh Mountain Airlines, is reported to want to fly Dash-7s into Pemberton. The Bjorn Borg Whistler Resort calls for a 350-room hotel, 125 condos, and a 16-court tennis cen- tre. Four courts will be covered and two will be stadium courts. The developers, the Park Georgia Group, say that the resort, which will feature tournaments and tennis camps, will bring a new tennis dimension to Whistler. There will also be extensive spa facilities and a golf centre, a teaching facility offering a mix of landscaped holes instead of the traditional driving range. Whistler Council is looking at the project. With all the money flying about, it’s not surprising that Whistler continues ta attract restaurants like the new French establishment, the Val d’Isere. At Tapley’s pub, however, where the draught beer sales are unrivalled in B.C., nobody gets too carzvied away with talk of the big time — not when carpenters are making more than lawyers, and plumbers talk T-bills with urologists. As a framer said, the place doesn’t even have a McDonald's. Maybe they're getting us ready for the $15 hamburger.
