Education Information WV Council objects to speeder car loss THE ELIMINATION of railway “‘speeder”? cars proposed by BC Rail for next January has been met with disfavor by West Vancouver District Council. “Having lived near the railway at one time, I can say that the speeder cars give some degree of comfort to people,’’ said Ald. Mark Sager, following council’s decision to register their disap- proval of the scheme with BC Rail. Council also pointed to the con- cerns being shown by the West Vancouver Fire Chief Colin Evans, who is concerned with the poten- tial reduction of rail safety in the district. BC Rail wants ‘to eliminate the speeder car patrol, which scouts for track obstructions, because company officials say it is umnec- essary. But, stated Evans in a memo to council, “The possibility of track obstruction by a stalled vehicle or debris or vandalism must surely be considered as possible obstruc- tions, not to mention rail failure which is major cause of train acci- dents, as is hunzan negligence such as siding switches not being clos- ed.” BC Rail also transports a bread range of hazardous materials via its West Vancouver tracks. CN Rail’s use of speeder cars is disappearing, although tracks are inspected periodically either on foot or with a truck adapted to rail use, BC Rail proposes to eliminate the speeder car patrols but retain their other inspection activities, which include weekly inspection by a roadmaster and twice weekly in- spection by alternate inspection crews. The assistant roadmaster and maintenance crews are always somewhere on the track, which is always electronically monitored.
