DouG COLLINS et this straight ¢ THE DISSEMINATION of drivel and the suppression of news have become common. Perhaps it was always so, depending on the political fashions of the time. But they are especially evident today. You have only to look at the treatment South Africa receives. The country has become the West’s number one villain. Mellow Mikhail of Moscow, meanwhile, has become one of the good guys and will soon take tea with the Queen; President P.W. Botha of South Africa, however, wouldn’t get past the palace gates. Here in Canada, we shine up to the Rus- sians and allow the communist African Nationa) Congress free rein. The case of the Sharpevilie Six illustrates how news suppression [ n most of Africa, human rights do not exist and thousands and tens of thousands are wiped out by oppressive governments. Ethiopia is a prime example.’’ Di operates. They were properly con- victed of having been involved in. the murder of a black deputy mayor narned Kuzwayo Dlamini, whose council had authorized small rent increases. (Nothing to do with apartheid, you will note.) Yet the case became an interna- tional cause celebre, with the result that Botha has commuted their death sentences. You would have thought, from al! the fuss, that six entirely innocent people had been sentenced on the flimsiest of evidence. A Canadian Press report out of Johannesburg on Nov. 23 shows what I mean. It read: ‘*No evidence was presented that the six contributed physically to the death of the councillor ... In- stead, they were convicted under the doctrine of common purpose, which held them responsible because they allegediy were active participants in the mob that killed Dlamini.” The impression created in this report and in dozens of others like ‘it is that The Six were just hanging around watching while the deputy mayor was done away with by a person or persons unknown. (He was in fact stoned and burned to death.) But all six were deeply in- volved. How do I know that? Because the South Africa Embassy has put out long extracts of the transcript of the trial and subsequent appeal, and detailed reports are available from professors of criminal law like S.A. Strauss of the University of South Africa. Yet none of our media have even mentioned them. ** No evidence was presented that the six contributed physically to the death of the councillor...’’ Re- ally? I quote from the appeal fin- dings: “‘Accused number one was the person who threw the first stone at the deceased, which struck him on the head and incapacitated him. **Accused number two threw a stone at the deceased at the time when he was attacked. It struck the deceased on the back. “Accused number three was one of the attackers who caught hold of the deceased as he was running to escape his attackers. He was the person who succeeded in taking the deceased’s pistol away from him.” (Faced with a murderous mob at his front door, Dlamini had armed himself and fired a shot.) “Accused number four (the woman) shouted repeatedly, ‘He’s shooting at us. Let us kill him.’ Subsequently, when the deceased was set alight and a woman remonstrated the crowd not to burn him it was this woman who assaulted her... ‘*Accused number seven was amongst the people who made the petrol bombs at the side of the deceased’s house... ““Accused number eight ... handed out petrol bombs to the mob and commanded them to set the deceased’s house on fire.”’ There’s more. All that was in doubt was who struck the final blow or lit the final match. And if you are wondering what happened to accused persons numbers five and six, they were acquitted. No one ever seems to mention that, either. We all know, you see, that there is no justice in South Africa. Drivel? For that, see the Van- couver Sun editorial of Nov. 28 dealing with Nelson Mandela, the commie terrorist who has become a hero to our liberal gapers and gawkers. The Sun sobbed that he has ‘‘spent the past 27 years in jail for his anti-apartheid efforts.’’ Yes, well those anti-apartheid efforts included being in the Rivonia gang of 10 who were gathering enough explosives to blow up half of Jo’burg. For years now the South African government has offered to release him if he will renounce vicience. He refuses to do so. One more thing: In most of Africa, human rights do not exist and thousands and tens of thou- sands are wiped out by oppressive governments. Ethiopia is a prime example. But no one seems to mind the doings of Col. Mengistu. On the contrary, we send him foreign aid. South Africa remains the villain.
