NORTH SHORE GROUP Caregivers gét support CARING FOR an aged relative often causes tremendous stress for the primary caregiver. It is only recently that our society has started to pay attention to the needs of caregivers, Beginning Sept. 3, the North Shore Caregivers Support Group will offer a program in which these needs can be met. “Caregivers of dependent elder- ly need care also,’’? said Phyllis Howard, the counsellor coor- dinator of the support group. Operating on a grant from New Horizons, a federal government seniors’ program, the group will meet 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at Lonsdale United Church, 3380 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver. ‘In some ways, caring for an aged relative can be a positive ex- perience with many rewards,’’ said Howard. ‘‘But having to deal with the steadily detcriorating health of a loved one and being responsible for the total care of a dependent relative can generate unpleasant feelings such as feelings of anxiety about the quality of care one is providing, feelings of resentment about having so little time for per- sonal needs, and feelings of fear of one’s own aging.”’ Often the caregiver must forgo an outing with friends and must forget about vacations and hob- bies, says Howard. If married, there is inevitable tension and strain as the caregiver strives to cater to the needs of both relative and spouse. “Dealing with these stressful situations can be emotionally draining and, in time, will have a negative impact on the health of the caregiver,’’ said Howard. 2 Tickets to a future 86ers Home Game. — Value $155.00 * Ist Runner-up receives: - 2 tickets to a future Vancouver 86ers Home Game.
