COVE corporate jawyer Martin Chambers was sentenced May 15 to nine years in jail following his May 6 conviction of con- spiring to import approximately one kilogram of cocaine. The charge was laid against the 47-year-old Chambers following incidents in 1981 in which he conspired with colleagues to import the drug. In sentencing Chambers, B.C. Supreme Court Justice William ‘Trainor said Chambers’ attempted abuse of Jawyer-client privilege by using law-office phones in the conspiracy was 4 major factor in the sentencing. 1 The ‘minimum jail term for the charge is seven years. . Lifeboat Society in their bid to help stranded boaters on the Vic- toria Day long weekend. The volunteers cume across four people Saturday in @ catamaran with a snapped mast one-quarter of a mile off Dundarave Pier. A society spokesman said the four were sitting in a tide rip with six-foot white caps about them. The stranded vessel was brought under tow. But while on this call, the crew was alerted to a 24-foot sailboat which had hit a fog near- by. The lifeboat stood by until a commercial vessel assisted the sailboat. The lifeboat next went to English Bay, where Victoria's Rescue Coordination Centre said many boaters were reporting trou- ble. The lifeboat assisted a 26-foot pleasure craft which had a broken anchor and was drifting towards Wreck Beach. The spokesman said the owner had cut his hands trying to hold onto the anchor chain in 1%-feet of water. He said as the lifeboat was get- ting the pleasure boat under tow, white caps were breaking into the lifeboat. Lifeboat crews searched for an overdue rental boat Sunday and Monday. The members searched Sunday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. in five-foot seas and 30-knot winds. The boaters were found safe Mon- day at Gambier [sland.
