Bar Association's TYS87 mid-winter

vention Centre.

issues that are important in
Canada today."’ says CBA Presi-
dent Brean Williams, OC.

Some 200 connei) members will
meet at the convention centre in
Whistler, B.C. ta debate policy
issues of the Canadian Bar and
learn about environmental activism
and the law and native self-
government.

On Monday, Feb, 23, Professoi
Murray Rankin of the University
of Victoria will moderate the en-
vironmental debaie.

Panelists will include Paul War-
son, whose Sea Shepherd Conser-
vation Society claims to have sabo-
taged Iceland's only whale-
processing plant last November.

Also on the panel will be News
columnist Bob Hunter, who is also
the former president and chief ex-
ecutive officer for the Greenpeace
Foundation; Professor Alvin Esau,
faculty of law, University of
Manitoba; and B.W.F.
McLoughlin, QC, Lawrence and
Shaw, Vancouver.

Native self-government will be
debated by a panel chaired by Pro-
fessor Andrew Thompson, faculty
of law, University of B.C. and
chairman of the CBA's special
committee on native justice.

Panelists include Squamish In-
dian Band Chief Joe Mathias who
will outline the Assembly of First
Nations’ position on the design
and function of self-government;
Hugh Braker, in-house counsel for
the Nuu-Chah-Nult Tribal Coun-
cil, who will describe the Sechelt
legislation and other working
models for self-government such as
the James Bay agreement; B.C.’s
minister of intergovernmental rela-
tions Bruce Strachan, who will br-
ing the provincia! view; Indian and
Northern Affairs Canada assistant
deputy minister Richard van Loon,
