Housing’s Grant MeNeil Development were awarded a first place certificate in a Lower Mainland garden contest. The children, under the guidance of Arlene Crossen, have been ten- ding a vegetable garden on West Second Street in North Vancouver. They won in the children’s cate- gory for the B.C. Housing Management Commission’s Peo- ple, Plants and Homes Contest. They’re also entered in the North Shore Gardens '86 contest, which will release the names of its winners Sept. 24. Crossen said the children first started their garden two years ago. They were also last year’s first prize winners for the garden con- test, sponsored by B.C. Housing Management Commission. “The kids really put a lot into the garden,” said Crossen. “They really enjoy it.”” She said when the garden is first planted the children meet and decide what seeds to plant. She said this year they decided on such plants as sunflowers, broccoli, tomatoes, beans, zucchini and corn. She said the children, who are in between six and 12 years old, are paired off and each given a section of garden to care for. She said the garden is in the middle of the Grant McNeil court- yard. This year the Housing Commis- sion erected a permanent six-foot cedar fence around the children’s garden and made two large raised beds for planting. The commission supplied the seed and bedding plants for the garden. Crossen, who has also been operating a children’s program in the area for the past five years, is chairman of the Grant McNeil Te- nants group. She also does teacher assisting and other volunteer work at the local school.
