Burrard Shipyards for a
while, but that was too bor-
ing. So he became known to
the police as the Motorcycle
Bandit. And on Friday, June
29, 1984, he waited near the
Park Royal liquor store to
kill a married man who had

He was also dumb enough
to keep about $4,200 of the
stolen money in his car. It
included ‘“‘bait’’ bills that
had been marked by the li-
quor store manager. The
police found it.

He had an “alibi” in
Calgary. That too went
wrong. ‘“‘Mr. and Mrs.

Evans"’ hadn’t spent the day
of the murder in Calgary.
Mrs. Evans had, but the guy
she was with wasn’t Mr.
Evans.

Tracking a murderer

one to crack, It’s one thing
to get information. It’s
another to obtain proof.
With some help from their
friends, West Van detectives
Leishman and Colin McKay
got it, talking to about 200
people in the process. .

So a bouquet to them; and
another to Denise Steele of
Purdy’s Chocolate in Park
Royal. She identified Evans
as the man who had been
hanging around in a motor-
cycle helmet before the
murder was committed.

Evans was arrested July 13
of last year, and the police
asked him whether he was
superstitious. He said he
wasn’t, that they had
nothing on him, and that
he'd be free in 30 days.

It'll be more like 30 years.
