ee AT - Friday, November 2, 1984 - North Shore News El mailbox >< Leadership of mayor protects W.Van's Dear Editor: A recent issue of the West Vancouver Municipal News described in exhaustive detail the facts and the issues related to a major planning decision (Ambleside By-the- Sea) being considered by the West Vancouver Council. This informative publication is a prime example of the ‘‘open government’’ that we enjoy in our community. With a municipal election occurring in the next few weeks, the well worn battle cry that ‘closed, insensitive, manipulative, etc., etc.’ form of government will come to an end if the aspiring can- didate is elected is probably predictable. This type of ac- cusation is far from the truth in West Vancouver. As a former alderman (for 6 years), I! served under former Mayor Peter Jones years) and the present Mayor Derrick Humphreys (4 years). Mayor Jones held many public meetings on key issues and initiated a Tatepayers survey [oO gain public opinion. Mayor Hum- phreys initiated the Municipal News publication future that has become a regular communication vehicle to the taxpayers throughout the year. In addition, Mayor Humphreys has continued the practice of meetings bet- ween Ralepayer Organiza- tions and the Council on im- portant issues. Under his leadership the West Van- couver Council has also had the foresight to deal with issues that will enhance and protect the future of West Vancouver - in contrast to ‘‘crisis management’’ that is so often experienced in other communities. Recently, {| have become aware of certain comments being made against the in- tegrity and leadership of our present Mayor. As a person who has served under Mayor Humphreys, ! can strongly support his integrity and leadership and can endorse his vision of West Vancouver in the future. 1 trust the electors in West Vancouver will continue their interest to deal with facts and issues in the upcoming election Robert N. Many people do not realize that arthritis affects one in four Canadian families. In B.C. alone, more than 320,000 people have arthritis, and 3,500 of them = are children under the age of 16. Some forms of arthritis have already been eliminated as the result of dedicated research. The fight goes on. With your help we will achieve Our goal: to eradicate the pain and crippling of all forms of arthritis as soon as possible. Danda Humphreys The Arthritis Society B.C.
