The meeting, which drew almost 400 people, focussed on women’s issues, with each of the nine candidates being polled on _ various points. Several of the minor candidates drew applause for their various stands, however, the majority of the night’s questions were directed at the candidates for the three major parties. Liberal candidate lona Campagnolo said Prime Minister Turner has already Stated equal pay for work of equal value ‘‘would be the rule, not the exception,” with all companies doing business with the federal government expected to adhere to this rule. However, she added that since federal contracts only cover 10 per cent of women in the work force, that there must be negotiation with the provinces to bring about changes in the private and provincial sector which af- fects 90 per cent of working women. Cook told the crowd he was not in favor of ‘‘total, free abortion,’’ but said he would also not vote for the pro-life movement. He call- ed for a strengthening of abortion committees, saying, ““Some are nothing more than rubber stamps.’’ He added he would not be in favor of refusing abortions to rape or incest victims or to mothers whose lives were in danger. Schreck said the NDP was committed to expanding the Canada Pension Plan to in- clude pensions for home- makers. However, he said since entitlement under the CPP depends on the number of years spent contributing to the plan, it will be neces- sary to change the rules of the Guaranteed Income Supplement and the Old Age Security in order to solve the immediate problems of homemakers who have not spent years in the workforce. He added it would also be necessary to expand the CPP NORTH SHORE WILL HAVE TO WAIT Computer delays channels THE INTRODUCTION of a package of specialized television channels for North Shore cable subsribers is be- ing delayed while Shaw Calesystems gets a new com- puter working. While other cable systems in the Lower Mainland have announced the availability of such services as all-sports and all-music channels, Shaw is postponing in- troduction of the services until its new computer system is operating smoothly. The new computer system is for internal company use and, says Shaw _ vice-presi- dent Ken Fowler, the com- pany wants to ensure it 1s working well before laun- ching the new programs. Fowler said he anticipates an announcement, on which channels will be made available, and when, will be made in mid-September. In their opening remarks, Campagnolo and Cook engaged in a battle of figures regarding high profile female politicians in their respective parties. Cook listed several promi- nent women in the Conser- vative Party and then at- tacked the Liberal Party for ‘‘only having one elected high profile president. That’s it.’’ Campagnolo refuted Cook’s figures and ran off a long list of Liberal female political and party members to a loud round of applause.
