AT HANDSWORTH
Bands come home

EX-MUSIC grads will be
joining the Senior Concert
and Senior Jazz Bands for
this annual reunion
homecoming concert May 23.

The Senior Jazz Band and
Senior Combo under the
direction of Bob Rebaglhiati,
recently gave a fine represen-
tation of the North Shore at
the New West Hyack Jazz
Festival both winning second
place. This two day event
featured 80 bands and com-

bos from the province and
N.W. States.
Congratulations also go to
Rob Marr for his fine base
play which won him a $165
scholarship. Both groups
were invited to compete in
the nationals in Toronto.
May 22 at the Handsworth
Junior Evening of Music you
will hear the award winning
Junior Jazz Ensemble,
directed by Bruce Hoadley,
which is currently in Toronto

competing at the National
Jazz Festival.

Also on the program will
be the Handsworth Or-
chestra, a sensational group
of string and wind players,
led by Roger Wecker and
Mary Hume, joining them
will be the Junior and In-
termediate Concert Bands
with their magnificent sound.

Tickets at the door 730
p.m. Adults $2, students and
seniors $1.

Benefit concert for
Peru flood victims

Vancouver Pro-Musica con-
ducted by John Zoltek, will
be performing its second con-
cert on the 27 of May, 8:00
p.m. at the West Point Grey
United Church.

Featured on the program
will be Genie award-winning
composer Michael Baker’s
concerto for flute and string
orchestra, with soloist Janet
Ogryzlo- Brown.

The concert will also
feature the world premiere of

Vancouver composer Paul
Nicholl’s Symphonic Tone
Poem, ‘‘By The Sea (On
Fire!)’’, Mozart’s Symphony
No. 39 and Aaron Copland’s
‘*Fanfare for the Common
Man’’.

Tickets are 6 dollars and 4
dollars, available at Black
Swan Records, Sikora’s
Classical Records and at the
Concert Hall, West Point

West 8th Avenue (at Tolmie).

Panych heads
Tamahnous

MORRIS PANYCH,
well-known Vancouver actor
and writer, has been ap-
pointed Artistic Director for
Tamahnous Theatre, a
group with which he has
been associated since 1980.
The most notable of
Panych’s accomplishments
with Tamahnous was the
writing and performing of
Last Call, a musical comedy
about nuclear war He 1s
currently appearing tn
Amadeus at the Playhouse

Tamahnous will continue
to produce new works that
are) oftented and = created
from within an assembled
company of actors and
theatre technicians

Plans for the theatre in-
clude two major projects
created by the company as
well as new = scripts from
playwrights closely
associated with Tamahnous.
Panych plans to develop
a more theatrical style,
based in music and move-
ment a sort of hyper-
realism."’

Tamahnous will continue
its residency at the Van-
couver East Cultural Centre

flood relief in Peru organized
by the International Relief
Agency, OXFAM-Canada.
