AS - Wednesday, Ianuary 27, 1982 - North Shore News I i x Attack on Trudeau ‘indecent’ Dear Editor: As you call your newspaper the “Voice of North and West Van- couver”, I would like to respond tc to the article of your writer, Bob Hunter, who uses the Polish situation as yet another excuse to lambaste Prime Minister Tradeau. From what I have gathered in the news and from what the Prime Minister said, he would want to save the Polish people from widespread bloodshed. Deep down, I suppose Mr. Hunter stands for the same thing, but by failing to ex- plore the alternative to martial law, he suggests that civil war would be a mere tea party by comparison. Now, disagreement may be desirable and = cven commendable, but when this person blatantly reviles our leader by saying. amongst other abusive things, he is criminally motivated in “support of the butchers in Warsaw”, it makes one wonder at the tolerated disrespect of the freedoms in our country. Keep guns for freedom Dear Editor: How right Bob Hunter is in his article “Trudeau's too much” (your January 13 gumber). We are being led by the nose along the path leading to a pernicious form of totalitarianism, not overt as An armed citizenry is no easy prey for dictators. First of all take away their weapons and the rest is easy. That is precisely what Trudeau and his minions are aiming at. One has only to consider Warren Allmand — step by step he is striving to legalize the elimination of any arms in the hands of individuals. To achieve this objective, they and his like dwell on those cases where firearms have been used to commit murder. They say, let us remove firearms from the people and so save lives. Thousands are killed in road accidents, many more suffer horrible injuries. That is the price we are ready to pay for the convenience of using automobiles. How much more should , we be prepared to pay a far smaller price for our liberty and freedom? Remember the true saying “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” W.F. Whittall West Vancouver Curb illegal parkers OPEN LETTER TO WEST VAN COUNCIL At this time I am not advocating or requesting 4 crackdown on illegal suites, I just wish to air my views on the matter. I am paying taxes for a single family area, and for the past several years have secn, what in my opinion is, a deterioration of this neighborhood due in part to more competition for the available parking space. I am im no position to judge whether the owners of these illegal suites need the added income, but it is my personal opinion that if these people need, or desire, a duplex, they should go into a duplex-zoned area. If they choose to stay in a single family area and maintain an illegal suite, the least they could do is provide parking for their tenants. Here in West Vancouver we have a bylaw (I think not widely known) that limits parking to three hours unless the vehicle is in front of the owner's place. I do not believe any reasonable citizen would expect that it be rigidly enforced, but I for one am fed up with vehicles that should not be here in the first place parking for hours and a source of annoyance to me and my guests. Perhaps if houses were taxed on the number of people they harboured, there wouldn't be as many vehicles congesting an area. I think that perhaps I have placed the last polite note under the windshield wiper of offending cars and, in future, should the need arise, I will turn the matter over to the police. A.W.
