But, he said, if this were the case, increase traffic. it would The St.Dennis Avenue site was chosen as the land is publicly owned, making it cheaper than buying private land and because of its proximity to other fire stations, said the Director of Development, Richard Plunkett. It's a good site for firehose training because large amounts of water are discharged and it can go directly into Lynn Creek, said Plunkett. Resident Pat Neufeld blasted District Council for the choice of location. “They talked about noise levels and they say it’s ac- ceptable, but if they com- bined that noise level with the noise level of garbage trucks and the cars going up to Cap College—there’s just going to be too much noise,” she said. “It is not acceptable .” Fire chief Bob MacDonald explained that noise levels as recorded at Lynnmour School, just south of the proposed site, met the requirements of noise bylaw. Jim Fraser, realtor and aldermanic candidate, said the training centre should be located in the industrial core “where firemen can make all the noise they want.” Distnct’'s Hammond 122 © $1465 LESAGE PIANOS Mayor Bell said such a location would undermine the municipal tax base as commercial and industrial revenues exceed residential. The new facility will cost between $400,000 and $700,000 depending upon a council decision to include a recreational building for the firemen. The centre will also in- clude classrooms. for seminars and workshops, as well as a foam pit to dispose of chemicals used _ to simulate emergency situations. Fire Chief MacDonald said the foam is bio-degradable, and “like Joy Detergent.” The foam will be contained in a ditch and released in a sewer, not storm .drains that run directly into Lynn Creek, said MacDonald. In addition, an eight-foot high fence will surround the site to prevent children from piaying there. One resident suggested putting the training centre beside the Hooker Chemical plant, but Mayor Bell dismissed the idea, saying such a location didn’t meet all the necessary requirements. resident Frank Kennedy supported centre, saying ‘‘school children might find wat- ching firemen in training educational.” Local Because of his support for the centre, Kennedy said, “I might have made a hell of a lot of enemies here tonight.” He said opposition to any plans to develop the area would continue until an ALDERMAN HM LAKES (right) feels there is an urgency to bufld the centre soon for safety reason.
