By PAT RICH Opposition by neighbours to a proposed group home at 953 Gladstone Avenue in North Vancouver, was responsible for killing the project, Bill Macbeth, the regional manager of Human Resources, revealed Thursday. Macbeth said the decision not to procede with the home was based on his recommendation. “This was based on our early indications that we wouldn't be proceding if there wasn't support for it (the home).” The provincial govern- ment announced late last month that the project, which stirred up a great deal of controversy, would not be going ahead. “We are still planning to continue to develop com- munity based resources on AS -Sunday News, September 7, 1980 the North Shore,” Macbeth said. But he said, “we are going to have to develop methods and techniques that are more effective.” Opposition to the proposed Glastone home had been so strong because neighbors felt it was being started in their midst without their knowledge or consent® Macbeth said it was too early to put his finger on lack Qf communication being the main reason for the failure of the project. “What we need to do is step back and reassess the whole event,” he said. “Life is a lesson,” he commented. He told the News that the Gladstone property would be put up for sale by the government and that the proposed group home would be replaced by the Parent and Child Effectiveness | ‘MORE EFFECTIVE MET: HODS' NEEDED ocal opposition killed group home (PACE) program. In this program, the child care workers who were going to staff the Gladstone home will be working with foster parents on a very Close basis. The children who would have been placed in the home will be living with individual] foster parents, but will be monitored on a constant, in-depth basis. Macbeth said Human Resources is looking for people wishing to be foster parents for troubled children from six to 16 years old. He said that anybody interested in the CARE program can contact Sheila Lonegren at 299-9131. Despite the failure of the Gladstone home, Macbeth echoed Jack Davis, the MLA for North Vancouver- Seymour, in saying that group homes are not dead on the North Shore.
