NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP have been
pleasantly surprised by a 1983 holiday trend — the:
number of people taking a drink or two and then
getting behind the steering wheel seems to be

dropping.

It’s a trend, they’re saying,
they hope continues through
New Year's Eve and into ear-
ly 1984.

Specific figures aren't
readily available, but in the
first week of the force’s an-
nual roadblock blitz, only
seven of the hundreds of
drivers pulled over were
charged with impaired driv-
ing or refusing to take a
breath test

crackdown on seat belts, tin
ding 95 drivers who weren't
buckled in

Roadblocks will be in place
until January 2, at which
lume a fuller accounting will
be made

As well as the seeming suc-
cess of the roadblocks, police
are also encouraged by the
number of telephone calls
they are receiving from
members of the general
pubhe reporting possible im-
paired drivers

According to spokesman

ing as many as three calls a
night

a faity comprehensive tele
vision advertising program

of drinking drivers and the
carnage that can be traced to
them
