The seventh track “of the 13-song CD is about the new “ money fever gripping the west at the turn of the millennium. (“Our sacred “stage, has been defaced, replaced to grace the marketplace, Dow is jonesing at the bit, 42nd Disney + Street.”). ; Smith appears to be concerned with the neverending spectre of ker B shelf. But that’s where I'll be putting my copy of Gung Ho. No Doubt owed much to Dexy’s Midnight Runners for their evolving sound as heard on the group's breakthrough, 1995’s Tragic Kingdom. The 1980s band capably fused soul, pop, Irish folk, new wave, and rock into one unique mix. No Doubt exchanged Irish folk for Ska and had something fresh for a while. Singer Gwen Stefani still sounds like Cyndi Lauper’s kid sister from the coast, but the music is a tad less frantic. The melodrama remains intact and is - best expressed on the opening song “Ex-Girlfriend” —the undeniable power of a woman scorned makes for one heck of a snappy track. — Michael Becker BS V/A Victory Style IV: Victory Records kkk Music category: Winning hardcore. Their new album on SubPop Is released May 8. 23 tracks by 23 bands that rock hard. The standouts on the disc are Hatebreed, Greyarea, Catch 22 and Snapcase. “Last Breath” by Hatebreed is an intense tune with impressive rhythms and a grinding bass line. Greyarea performs “Reminder”, not quite so __ hardcore, yet still driven home with solid and tenacious guitars. Sna tears through “Typecast Modulator” and Catch 22 is another highlighe with “Leaving” — a solid song structure, influenced slippery licks and upbeat tempos. With some financial help from North Vancouver city and district, there will be gigs on the second weekend of May at venues like the Rusty Guill, Seylynn Hall, Avalon and Pemberton Station. Local acts will be emphasized, but Umeeda Switlo told the News that national and international groups will be booked, too. “47 felt our venues were dying a painful death,” Swido said. “People were going downtown for a venue to go.” She said North Vancouver ~ is ideal to be the first suburb, to host NMW events because of the wealth of musicians, producers, managers and other music industry types who make their-homes here.
