up for British car meet

THE SPLENDID color and
greenery of VanDusen Botanical

Gardens will once again act as a
picturesque backdrop for the an-
nual Vancouver All-British Field
Meet, next Saturday, May 18.
Hundreds of vintage British
automobiles will be on display,
including a Lagonda V12, one of
only three built, a six-and-a-half
litre Bentley, pre-war Aston Mar-
tins, Rolls-Reyces, Bentleys,
Jaguars, Jensens, Lotuses, TVRs,
and other rare British
automobiles.

Perhaps the most interesting
cars will be che ordinary ‘daily
drivers’ that many of us grew up
with: Austin Cambridges,

.Wolseleys, Minis, MGBs, Triunv-

phs, Sunbeams. Anglias, and
other original and carefully-
restored examples of British motor
transportation.

A number of North Shore resi-
dents will be displaying their
“pride-and-joys” at the show,

Rover enthusiast Eric Russell will
be bringing his carefully restored
1969 Rover 2000TC. Russell
claims that this styfish sedan, first
produced in 1963, was ahead of
tts time, especially in the area of
safety.

“In 1963, or 1965, 1 forget
which, it was named ‘safest car in
the world’,”’ recalls Russell. ‘St
has a built-in roll cage and all the
panels bolt on and off, including
the roof. The gas tank is well up
into the trunk and there’s a steel
bulkhead between the passengers
and the tank. Back in 1965, it
even had diagonal, three-poini
seatbelts in the rear seat.”*

Russell, secretary of the Rover
Car Club of Canada, owns three
2000TCs, two that are running
and one he uses for parts. He
entered his second 2C0QTC in the
